When we hear the word Cancer, we all have someone we think about . . . for me it’s my Mum. But there are many other people close to me who are affected by cancer, who are battling each day . . . who are mothers, fathers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, friends . . . battling to beat the disease and spend more time with their loved ones and enjoy life each and every day.
It’s such a rollercoaster of emotions, we experience feelings of stress, anxiety, physical and emotional pain, grief, hope, joy and love. Finding ways to cope is essential to our wellbeing.
Yoga can help physical and emotional wellness, bringing a sense of calm to your whole body. Whether you are the one with cancer or a close friend or family member is suffering, your own physical and emotional wellness will be affected. If you are someone who regularly exercises, you may find your usual method just isn’t working for you. While exercise helps in os many ways, your already exhausted, and may not have the energy for traditional types of exercise, which can be making your nervous system even more stressed.
A restorative yoga class or even a yoga nidra can have such positive effects on the mind and body. A study at Harvard shows that “after a single class, average levels of tension, anxiety, depression, anger, hostility, and fatigue dropped significantly”. A yoga practice doesn’t have to be a full on flowing vinyasa class, it may be a lie down in Savasana for 20 minutes focussing on your breathing.

- Yoga strengthens your immune system
Practicing yoga has been shown to help recovery rates in cancer patients as it helps the immune system. Yoga aids in drainage of the lymphatic system which helps rid the body of toxins, The lymphatic system is important to your immune system, it fights bacteria and destroying old or abnormal cells. 2. Yoga helps to manage stress, anxiety, fear and depression
It’s such an unsettling time, you may have noticed yourself holding your body in a particular way and the mind may be worrying, thinking ahead of all the future possibilities. This chronic stress depletes the body. Yoga can teach you to relax this tension, allowing the body to move into its resting phase lowering cortisol levels in the body (if cortisol levels are high, it can compromise the immune system), of you can manage your stress, anxiety it will help to reduce inflammation, promote healing and helping you to cope with the waves of emotions.

I love the look on my clients faces after a yoga class. The world becomes a better place when you wake up from Savannah. Once we bypass some of the fear and anxiety, we experience a feeling of complete relaxation and realise what’s possible
4. Manage your physical pain
Yoga is a natural way to reduce stress, breathing can work as an antidote to pain and tension. Research carried out by Candace Bushnell found that chronic pain can be prevented or reversed through mind-body practices such as yoga. Yoga bulks up gray matter in the brain which has multiple functions, one of which is the ability to manage pain. Yoga can help to counteract chronic pain.
Yoga isn’t just a form of exercise, it doesn’t just work muscles but helps to increase blood flow, enhances lymphatic system (removes toxins) balances glands and hormones which helps to improve sleep and elevate mood. It’s a daily practice which you adjust to fit in to your lifestyle. All you need to do to practice is show up! It doesn’t matter if you have never stepped on a mat, can’t touch your toes, are recovering from injury or illness or are a competing athlete. Yoga provides something for every body at all different stages of your life.
In addition to yoga we are so passionate about Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) for the difference it’s made to our lives. Many cancer patients have also reported feeling less fatigue, reduce pain and able to cope with side effects of chemotherapy after receiving treatments of Kinetic Chain Release (KCR). KCR is a series of mobilisations and stretches design to bring the body back into its natural alignment therefore reducing pain, promoting healing, improve sleep and allowing all the systems of the body to function as they should.
