Benefits of practicing Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra means Yogic Sleep, it is a state of conscious deep sleep.

‘Doing nothing’ in our society today rarely happens, life is hectic, chaotic, fast paced and accessible. When was the last time you took time to rest? And this didn’t involved a reading a book, watching TV, or sleeping or being distracted by your phone? Doing nothing can be so rewarding and healing for our body.

Yoga Nidra is a guided class of complete relaxation. It can be anywhere for 10 minutes – 45 minutes long, you are guided through a yogic-sleep where you will be completely relaxed but totally aware.

The benefits of yoga nidra are;

  • helps to release any physical and mental muscle tension
  • lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, heart rate, levels of adrenaline and cortisol which leads to;
    • relief from stress and anxiety
    • improved concentration and mental clarity
    • Increases energy levels
    • improves creativity
    • improves senses and body awareness
    • enhance memory and capacity for learning

30 minutes of yoga nidra is the equivalent of 3-4 hours of deep sleep

I have been such a fan of yoga nidra since I first practiced, I have used it so much over the past year to take 15 – 30 minutes out of my day, or to help me sleep at night if I’m running through my to do list.

I’ve also used it a lot in my classes, retreats and with children. Especially children with autism,  yoga nidra made such a huge positive impact on them.  After this practice I see a difference in their energy, they appear calmer, communicate better with each other, show compassion and kindness to other in the class. They become more focussed throughout the day.

To practice yoga nidra it’s important to remain still so please make sure you are warm, comfortable and can get the full benefit of the practice.
