Eating Healthy is something we all want to do but we don’t necessarily know how to in our face paced chaotic lifestyle. Fran Stockley shared some tips below.
What are your top tips for eating healthy on a budget?
I recommend buying wholesale fruit and veg, supermarkets are ok with prices on fresh produce but wholesale is 20 / 30 / 40% off what you pay retail, if you are serious about your health, find a wholesaler, they are in every part of the country. Order every 2 weeks and get big trays of fruit and veggies delivered to your door. You could split with a neighbour. It’s a good way to make sure you have lots of natural things around you in lots of different colours.
When you buy fresh stuff you are spending less anyway, often the coffees and sandwiches are what cost a lot and start to stack up, make your own food before you go out for the day. Make a smoothie, salad in the morning take them with you. Take what you have cooked the night before.
Do you prepare food in advance?
My car is full of satsumas, dried mango, dates, I like to eat whole fruits now rather than smoothies but occasionally I’ll make smoothies, but I’ve always got something in my bag so I can grab something. Sometimes I’ll buy a juice from the supermarket.
What are your thought on snack such as protein balls, coconut oil, cacao powder that seem to be all over the media at the moment. You don’t mention any of those so I’m interested to hear your thoughts?
I think it’s a gimmick, it’s nice and they are tasty but we are hunter gatherers, we pick berries of tree. Occasionally we might have killed and animal only occasionally but we would have gone for the easiest less energetic option because we need energy to collect firewood or build our homes. We would have been picking berries or fruit that would have fallen from the tree that and been eating them. I don’t think we would have spent time breaking nut shells and eating one nut at a time unless that was all we had. It’s not that our body can’t digest that it’s just that it takes more time and it’s not full of glucose.
Coconut oil is high protein, high fat it slows the body down as it doesn’t detox the body. It’s kinda gimmicky and people will say it’s raw but it’s better to have a big plate of steamed veggies than it is to have a ball of nutty stuff because it’s much easier to digest, whereas the oils and nuts are mucus forming so they will create mucus forming response in the body and it will slow it. Most people don’t want to slow the body. It’s been marketed very well, superfoods have been marketed well. When I first started this work I was scared about coming out about it because it’s so simple. Fruit and veg it’s so simple it’s’ scary, so like I eat nothing else? So when the mind calms down about this and be like, ok that’s what I do, occasionally I have something else, it’s easy it’s done I don’t have to think about it, I don’t needs loads of recipes. Occasionally I’ll make a salad dressing.
But when you feel how good you feel eating this way but we’re trained to have lots of options, different supplementation, strength from protein worried about calcium and dairy and all that stuff. My well true feeling is if we’re all in the wild now, we would not be trying to hunt an animal we’d be trying to find coconuts and berries and glucose rich foods. It’s blindingly simple it’s coming to terms with that, we don’t need to complicate it and we’re not going to die just eating fruit and veggies.
Especially if you have a chronic health condition or playing sport at a high level how to inflamed the body is to eat a high protein high glutinous diet which is what most people are eating. If you can get away from that and eat foods which digest with hours sometimes within minutes, you can perform and that’s a gorgeous feeling.
Can you make suggestions on what food to eat for either before or after a training session, such as a strength and conditioning session?
S&C you wouldn’t be in a detox phase, it’s not you can’t but it’s breaking the body down and acidifying so you would look for something like a Banana smoothie – ¾ super green powder of fresh green. If the personal goal is to build muscle then more greens, so generally greens build muscle whereas fruits clean and purify if you want to lean out.
Greens at every meal – client who want maybe some more fat, rare occasion I would say have some fat some avocados.
If you want to lean out, have a high fruit diet, bananas are one of the least detoxing fruits but again if you are doing a gym session my favourite juice is bananas, raspberries and coconut water, frozen bananas are nice because it makes the consistency thick. We don’t need to have things like protein powder or almonds with it, if we want to detox and lean out we don’t need this, it will slow us down.
If you’re hungry eat. One thing that takes a few weeks to get your get around is how you feel. When you eat spag ball for example you get that heavy feeling. Some people are like ‘I’m still hungry’, so if you’re hungry, eat just have another banana or another smoothie, you can’t overeat on fruit your body will say ‘ok I’ve had enough now’.
Always eat today for tomorrow performance because tomorrow is where if you get to today and not feeling great it what happened yesterday.
Can you make some meal suggestions . . . do you suggest having a bigger lunch rather than evening meal. I’ve heard digestion worked better when it’s light rather than when it’s dark outside?
Yes I agree with that, I stop eating at around 5pm, I don’t always manage it. I’m an early to bed girl, I like to wind down and be in bed by around 9pm, I don’t always managed it but I try. We’re not designed to eat way into the evening, but people have different rhythms so if you are a night owl you might eat more and then not eat til 11am 12pm the next day.
What are some of your favorite recipes?
My fav is just watermelon, papaya – feasting on fruit
Fruit meal – banana ice cream – frozen bananas, raspberries coconut water like pink ice cream and some chopped dates on top like a caramel chew, I’ll have a big bowl so 3 or 4 bananas in there.
Savory – spiralized courgette or spiralized carrot. I make a dressing in nutribullet – I don’t use salt or oil but will use celery and that gives it a salty taste, I’ll pout in raw carrot, raw courgette, ginger, red pepper, nutritional yeast (not essential, it’s just flour) lemon juice, dates) gives a thick dressing and pour all over my noodles, that can be steamed or cooked.
My advice to people who are new to a raw diet, keep vegetables for in evening. Not everyone feels like fruit and create a sauce that has no oil in it. Or have soups or casseroles, they are great, so lighter and easier to digest.

meaning if you are not getting any fun not just in food but in business in relationships in where you live, if you’re not feeling fun you gotta change it. Change the way you’re thinking about it or change the situation. Life’s too short not to have fun! If it’s not fun you can’t sustain it and you’re gonna get burn out.
That quote means so much as it was my experience, I got so burnt out that I forgot life was supposed to be fun, my wake up call was so early on. I wasn’t having any fun, I was completely burnt out trying to over perform and achieve, achieve, achieve and not having any fun.
