What to expect during an Ayurveda Diet + Lifestyle Consultation

You may have heard me talking about Ayurveda over the past year, but you may not know what it is or even how to pronounce the word!  Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word made of two parts ‘ayur’ which means life/longevity and ‘veda’, which means science and or knowledge. Which means Ayurveda is the Science of Life.

You may already be thinking

  • What is Ayurveda?

  • How will it help me?

  • Will I have to make drastic changes?

While you may not have heard much about Ayurveda, it’s been around for over 5,000 years and many other forms of medicine and healing have stemmed from Ayurveda including Chinese medicine and herbal medicine.

If you’ve studied yoga you may have heard of Ayurveda as it’s considered yoga’s sister science, they both work together.

Ayurveda helps to restore the body's natural state of health by working on improving the digestive system through diet and lifestyle advice, therapies, treatments and herbal medicines.

It can bring relief to many disorders such as anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, menopause, digestive problems, skin disorders, irregular periods.

How can Ayurveda help me?

  • Do you feel bloated after a meal?

  • Do you feel tired all the time?

  • Do you have afternoon slumps?

  • Do you have any skin problems such as rashes, eczema, dry skin? Do you experience guilt around food?

  • Are you struggling to concentrate or stay focused? Do you feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious?

  • Do you suffer from PMS or irregular periods?

  • Do you feel angry and frustrated?

  • Are you struggling to get motivated?

If you relate to any of these then Ayurveda can help you. An Ayurvedic Therapist or Dr can advise diet and lifestyle changes to address your symptoms.

What Should I expect during an Ayurvedic Consultation?

If this is your first experience of Ayurveda (I’m so excited for you!) Get ready to go from imbalanced to balanced and start to see you symptoms disappear and your energy increase!

To start, we’ll sit down with a glass of water or cup of tea. We’ll have a chat, the consultation will start like your typical doctor’s appointment, asking common questions you would expect such as “What symptoms you’ve been having?”, following on with questions about your diet, your occupation, lifestyle, activities you take part in and so on.

We will ask some simple questions when you book like your name, address, main complaints, (all part of our insurance and record keeping, we never share any of this information) then get down to further questions during your consultation. Ayurveda is focused on the cause of the symptoms rather than just treating the symptoms, so you’ll be asked a lot of questions about your whole diet and lifestyle, so we can investigate the cause of the symptoms.

What will I have to change?

Please do not be worried about having to eat foods you don't like or completely overhaul your diet.

Let me reassure you, it's about small steps, gradual changes and listening to your body.

You don't have to eat Indian food all the time
You don't have to become vegan or vegetarian
You don't have to be wheat or dairy free
That's of course unless you want to

We will make some tweaks to your current diet, to help make your digestion stronger so your body can absorb nutrients.

On arrival to The Barn please come in, we may be finishing with clients so please make yourself comfortable on the seats in the hallway and we'll be with you as soon as possible.

You will be offered a glass of water or cup of tea and we'll get started with your consultation. The consultation will be held in privacy in one of our treatment rooms.

You’ll be sent an email with our Skype details, please connect with us  before your consultation. We’ll contact you at the time of your appointment. If for any reason the video does not work, we will contact you via phone. Please make sure you send us the correct number.

You’ll be given some suggestions of things to change in your diet and be given a diet sheet away with you to help adapt your meals.

You may also be given some herbal supplements and be asked to come again in 2-6 weeks.

The reason for waiting for 2-6 week as it takes 30-35 days where your body goes through a cycle of nutrition travelling to 7 layers of tissues - plasma, blood, muscle fat, bone, bone marrow and seminal fluid.

What to expect following treatment

You need to work on changing habits, I can help you, advise on what you need to do but once you leave the consultation room it’s up to you to make the changes and give them time to work. Unlike a pill Ayurveda is not a quick fix, although you may see some changes in your symptoms quickly, the process can take a few cycles to really see results, but they will be long lasting results!

A second consultation usually takes place 2-6 weeks after the initial one, to see how you’re progressing and tweak your plan if necessary. I may suggest additional or different herbs depending on the outcome of your follow-up.
